GPRS data transmission rate

GPRS data transmission rate depends on the network load and a number of users simultaneously working in the cell. It means that total data transmission rate available is shared among all users. Total data transmission rate may vary from 9.02 kilobits per second (kb/sec) up to 171.2 kb/sec depending on the network capacity and configuration.

Data transmission rate depends also on the GPRS handset. Technical parameters of the GPRS handset determines to what extent it is able to utilize the network resources allocated to data transmission. GPRS handsets are divided into several categories or multi-classes. Belonging to any of the multi-classes determines the maximum data transmission rate of the GPRS handset it is able to endure.

* - at a data transmission rate of 13.4 kbps per communication channel
** -total number of communication channels for the 6th and 9th multi-classes that may be used simultaneously is different (4 and 5 channels respectively). It means that the handset of the 6th multi-class cannot fully use all five communication channels, it is able to simultaneously use only four of them. Thus the maximum download rates for the handsets of the 6th and 9th multi-classes differ
